Glass
Block Technology has a range
of fire blocks available. Fire blocks are generally used in areas
where fire ratings are an issue for example fire escape routes,
apartment common areas, separation of kitchen to living areas &
third storey loft conversions.
Glass
Blocks fire tests are measured in increments of 15 minutes. A general
guide to the definition between Fire Integrity & Thermal isolation.
Fire
resistance is concerned with four criteria:
(a) Mechanical Resistance - the glass block wall must
stay upright without too much damage following testing
(b) Thermal isolation
(c) Imperviousness against blaze
(d) No flammable emission during testing.
These tests are recorded in 15 minute increments.
Definition
Fire Integrity (G-category glazing)
The glass block wall must pass Test (a) above.
THERMAL ISOLATION (F-category
glazing)
The glass block wallmust pass all four
of the criteria above (a-c).
Glass Block Technology Precast Fire rated panels
are manufactured in accordance with the glass block manufacturers
test & certification data.
Different fire rating requirements mean variations
in construction
of the panels from the blocks used, quantity of vertical & horizontal
stainless steel reinforcement to joint sizes or border widths.
Panels can be manufactured in single or connecting
pieces dependent on the size required and should be restrained in
place ideally with steel.
60 / 15: La Rochere
clear 190x190x80 glass blocks when installed in accordance with
Glass Block Technology’s Rods & Mortar system achieve
certification for 1 hour fire integrity & 15 minute thermal
isolation. This higher fire rating is achieved due to the purity
of La Rochere glass blocks that will only fuse at a higher temperature
of around 1550°C.
Other patterns available in fire rated ranges.
*F30 190x190x100 is a specialist block differing from standard
190x190x100.

BORDERS AND CLAMPS Precast Concrete Fire Rated Panels are always
manufactured with perimeter borders as a requirement under
fire certification and also designed to assist with clamping
panels in place as shown.
EXPANSION FIBRE
Expansion material is crucial for fire rated panels. This
example depicts a 60/30 panel which requires a minimum
20mm perimeter expansion joint. Mineral fibre can be used
or two lengths of GBT 10mm expansion foam doubled up (head
and jambs). 2 No. bitumen strips to the base also siliconed
over in a fire Stop silicon.
ARCHITRAVE
Where the precast panel meets the perimeter opening, the
join has been decoratively finished by an architrave moulding.
